Introduction

In the European Theater of War (ETO) during World War II many specialized units worked quietly and mostly behind enemy lines to take their of the United States dead. The care of deceased military personnel and the maintenance and supervision of American (temporary) cemeteries were  among some of the special services entrusted to The Quartermaster General. These units operated both seperately as attached to other units. For example, during and shortly after operation Overlord on D-Day, 6 June 1944, most divisions landing on the beaches had a graves registration company attached. They opened the first cemeteries on the beaches where just hours before Americans GI’s landed. All these units had their own unique achievements and stories to tell. It is our wish to share these stories with the world, however, we can’t do it all alone.
